A wise person would see that Adam does in fact have a point because I'm annoyed at the fact that joe kept cutting him off so he could be the one who was right instead of just listening. This proves he was insecure cause otherwise why argue about something you know for yourself. If you know then you have nothing to prove and this would just be listening and trying to understand another viewpoint. Not talking over a person. It's really a matter of ego, not alpha or beta. Sha-duh.

    I think there are a lot of hubbub over the simple ideas that Adam is positing (granted, not very well);

-People are more dominant/submissive on environment/social situation.
    -There's always a bigger fish.
-Humans aren't living like wolves that form a pact and stay with only that pact for life so hierarchy isn't that simple.

He's not saying any of the "alpha" traits are bad, he's saying that people excel in their domain regardless of how alpha they think they are.

The thing I love about the left is that they are intelligent in the fact that they speak eloquently, but the logic behind their arguments is fucking retarded. Adam can say whatever he wants, we all live in the same world. You don’t have to poll women to know they like muscular confident men. I have never seen a woman drool over a man that isn’t within the rungs of what would be consider an alpha. Go to any public pool you want and watch every woman’s head turned when the dude with massive pecs and an 8-pack walks by. That’s not a societal construct lol.

You're attracted to whomever you're attracted to. It can be a nerdy, awkward girl, a big girl, whatever. Everyone doesn't chase after the supermodel thotty type. Conversely, females date and mate with guys of every physical stature. It is facile to say that because of the "beauty" standard mythos, every single person is purely seeking a model or UFC fighter.

    Couple points:
"Alphas" don't exist in wolf packs, and the original researcher has spent his entire career trying to correct the misinformation.
There are humans that are more forthcoming, but it's a combination of a lot of factors, not a single "alpha/beta" switch that's either on or off.
That said, Adam sounds like an idiot.

I do think that women, at least in their younger and more child birthing ready days are into more athletic and confident guys. Is everybody into guys like that? Nah, a majority are, but not everybody. And it kinda goes to show in my high school. My high school has a lot of genetically gifted people, it’s insane. Every 3/5 dudes has at least a four pack. But, the women, and it gets weird here, the girls at my school, the majority of them are dating these super skinny guys, like ridiculously skinny guys. Most of the girls at my high school are heavier than the guys they’re dating, it’s weird for me, I can’t quite wrap my head around it. But I see it everyday. And they’re not even like “In good shape skinny”, they are pretty close to skinny fat. Like these are the bodies you would see in the eighties movies with the little skinny nerd getting thrown in a locker by the high school star quarterback.
I really dunno, maybe my high school is a special case.

The more hilarious thing about how the discussion of alpha /beta has entered the popular discourse is that it hardly even reflects the now debunked study of the betas had a pretty plum role given that they were the right hand wolves or second in command meaning that they had a lot of power with slightly less responsibility but is deff next in line for the wolf throne

In nature there is no alpha male? Why do you think in many species of animals the males fight for breeding rights? He might have a argument that all men are not looking for a hourglass figure. I personally do not like woman with big asses. I use to date a puerto rican woman and she asked me why white guys always hit on her. I told her that is because she has big tits and a small ass. Black and latin guys usually prefer woman with large asses. Dated another woman who only dated guys with a stocky build and a little bit of a gut. People have types that they like. Being taller and muscular, though is generally preferable in men.

I don't know what women this guy has been talking to, but I know I look at pro athletes and think "that's so attractive." Any chance he's just self-conscious about his own bod? It makes sense that women would be attracted to a guy who can protect her and seem "alpha-like". Confidence and muscle is sexy. All my friends who I've talked to feel the same way, our boyfriends all have the big muscular body type. The rare exception is my borderline man-hating friend who likes skinny nerdy non-threatening boys, but most of us don't find that attractive.

  • Line Johnson

I actually think that Joe guy is wrong, I'm not saying Adam is right since he hasn't been making a lot of sense but even though humans are in general attracted to symmetry and stuff like that I think body preferences are fort and foremost cultural and that's easy to prove going from one country to an other that our glass shape may or may not be what is seen as beautiful.

World leaders don't have to be athletic, 6 foot tall males to be considered an alpha male. Every situation is different. You could be the best at what you do in your field, but that doesn't make you an alpha in every situation. If some muscular giant starts knocking out a college professor, you're not going to root for the giant if you respect the professor. Then that giant has the problem of dealing with a mob.

  • Sadoruro
    Sadoruro 3 ngày trước

Well I made it to 6 minutes but not more. it's too bad Adam didn't brought the two most obvious arguments against Joe ideas (which are commonly heard). First you take the Roman Empire, the ideal body for a woman was what we could call fat now : plenty of fat, large waist, large limbs, etc. The ideal body for a man was (in contrary to the Greeks ideal) slim, not much muscular, and with a tiny dick (because being muscular with a large penis was for the Barbares, aka the non-roman uncivilized people).
That vision perpetuated through all the middle age. Especially with Christianism, being athletic and such wasn't seen well at all.
It was all flipped over around the 50's. The ideal woman body was then pictured with small waist, big breast, well all the modern representation of the woman. The ideal man body begun to become the athletic one. So it isn't AT ALL an evolutionary thing. It a cultural thing.
And for alpha and betas : those words refers to a hierarchical system in animals. Period. That their definition. If you don't speak about animals that use this system, then these words are misused. There's more confident humans than others and such, but alphas and betas words don't apply here by definition. That's all.

Neenjah Rammus 3 ngày trước +15

Adam is being overly pedantic, retreating to his argument that people are incorrectly using evolutionary terms related to hierarchies, when he clearly knows the words like Alpha and Beta are colloquially used to refer to levels of confidence and assertiveness. He can't argue against Joe's point so he just keeps dodging it and instead arguing semantics. Fair enough, he makes a valid point that humans are not in these permanent, static small groups where one is always an Alpha or always a Beta..and one's confidence can vary depending on the situation or context.. but you know that static social hierarchy is not what most people are referencing when they talk about Alphas or Betas.
However Joe is not 100% right either. He asserts that men have always been attracted to thin, shapely women, when historically we know there have been times when a bit of extra fat has been viewed as a desirable symbol of status and wealth. I don't believe that even in those time men would have looked at a woman like Scarlett Johansson and not found her attractive, but then again there are also cultures in other parts of the world that find women wearing giant discs disfiguring their lips attractive. It's difficult to say whether men from such a tribe would have found Scarlett Johansson attractive if she stood before them, but I think they would at the very least found her intriguing.
I do believe standards of beauty have a basis in evolutionary biology, but I also believe there can be no denying that social factors do have their influence. As usual in nature vs nurture debates, I don't think you can just assert a simple answer declaring one side the total victor.

    • Objective Realist 420
Objective Realist 420 2 ngày trước

Alpha and Beta stereotypes make sense in the wild, but in a modern human civilization it makes less sense. An alpha male stereotype in the wild would typically be the leader of his pack, the most efficient predator who strikes fear in everyone, but also rapes females and kills other males when his ego is threatened. An almost exact comparison would be, a human who may go to the gym every day, beat up everyone, rape women, but we would also consider this person an unethical psychopath who should be locked up, because he is dangerous and a terrible person. Confidence is not the only thing that matters. This violent psychopath may also have a low IQ and be unemployed. Intelligence and careers are not something animals in the wild value in the same way humans do. Confidence and assertiveness are useful tools. But you may have an intelligent guy who is passive because he just does not care what other people think. I think human society and values are far too complex to make use of such primitive labels such as alpha and beta. Every human has their own desires and their own strategy for getting what they want. A smart business man may want to appear not confident as a way of deceiving competition, or he may avoid people completely and be programming some app that will make him rich. He is thinking about the end game. He knows when he is rich many beautiful women will be happy to date him. Confidence can be used to attract dates, and can be used as a tool in many other domains. It is at least important to be confident about yourself, but not in the same way as in the wild. And many other attributes are just as important in our human society.
