But Japan can be proud they went toe to toe and won against some of the best teams and players in the world. They also found their football identity in this tournament. This will inspire a new generation just as previous Japan teams did. They were very fun to watch. The future of Japanese football is trending up.

huge respect to japan. upon finding out that mexico lost (the team i was rooting for), i saw myself rooting for japan and getting emotional seeing them proceed to the knockout rounds. with that being said, japan played well and i’m now a fan! even though this wasn’t the outcome i was expecting, i look forward to seeing them play in the future!

Yes, it was bitter (and yes I wish they had practiced PK more) but I remember when Japan started J. league back in 1993 when the level of Japanese soccer was not nearly close to what it is now. They have come a long way. It is still a very long way ahead. The Germans are also considered the masters of the penalty kick shootout, I don't believe they've ever lost a shootout at the World Cup. I have always loved to watch Japan play. They are so good with their attacks and runs.
They need to work on their penalty kicks. Otherwise excellent performance.

Japan did great. I’m glad they fought hard all towards the end. Penalties was kinda a given for me that it was over. But I’m glad it was 1:1 ended. That's the second time in a row Japan is eliminated in the last 16. Also in heartbreaking fashion like Russia 2018. As for Croatia, I'm happy for them and I hope they go far. Luka Modric is phenomenal for being a 37-year-old midfielder

As a Mexican-American, with no tangible connection to Japan, I was getting more and more emotional after each blocked penalty shot. They showed such heart for those 120 minutes. I am glad they received such a positive response. Class act.

The second I saw they went into penalties I already knew it was over. You don’t take a team like that to penalties it’s like challenging Italy in penalties their the masters at penalties

@WyvernX Well to be fair, Japan only had one shootout experience at the WC before today and that was in 2010.
+JAPARICAN Yeah, Croatia won 2 shootouts last World Cup, they've got plenty of confidence in that situation. The Germans are also considered the masters of the penalty kick shootout, I don't believe they've ever lost a shootout at the World Cup. Italy have lost a couple though, including the 1994 Championship against Brazil.
