The Valar are only a sub-set of the Ainur - some of the most powerful, who chose to enter Arda and help prepare it for the coming of the children of Eru.

When I read some of the Silmarillion, all I could think about Eru Illuvatar is that he was kind of a dick. Instead of just sitting Melkor down, and telling him that his hopes and aspirations were essentially meaningless, as in no matter how hard he strived to create, and no matter how long he searched through the outer realms, he would never find the means to create life on his own, he just let Melkor struggle on, fruitlessly, and then he punished him for it.

Of course, if Eru had done that, then it would have been admitting to himself that he's essentially been playing with himself, alone, as the only living thing that really matters for all of eternity.

    Godship's kinda bleak, huh?

This combined with some googling on the wiki is very helpful for piecing things together. So Gandalf and the Balrog (Balrogs?) are both maiar, which is why he and the balrog "Durin's Bane" (title more than a name) were on similar footing during that scene in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Even though they were made by completely different valar? Not sure about their origins, which seems to be the case for the wiki too.

And Gandalf, being the human form of Olórin, was one of the istari, which is just a fancy name for five specific maiar who took the form of old men to help stop Sauron the first time?

Hoo, I'm gonna forget all of this. It's the fancy names that does it.

This is NOT a good encapsulation of Tolkien's mythos. Men were the Getting Stuff done people? Really? The elves never got anything done? They created just about everything that was awesome in Middle Earth, while the Men spent most of their history sulking that they weren't elves. This is really sloppy, and I have to wonder whether you even read The Silmarillion, or just got all this from Wikipedia.

Wizards only became angels later in Tolkien's life, when he got a lot more Catholic. They were originally lesser gods, as the Valar were the greater gods, like the Greek pantheon.

Cool. That is the cleverest rip off we have ever experienced.
Not even the helpers of God knew who they were working for.
Did you know that before the Dutch,
    and their establishments,
(in the colonies of The Americas)
    the Swedish had arrived first?
It only lasted for three quarters of a century
    and was of course superseded
    but it happened none-the-less.
    Kind regards
    LM
    God bless

Why did this God make evil angels? And why would this God make humans so corruptible. And why would this God just leave men in the world with evil, more powerful beings to suffer? This book seems to have a lot of unanswered questions, and this god doesn't seem very nice, or wise.

Melkor wasn't banished by Iluvatar during the Music.
Also in Tolkien universum death and mortality is actually a GIFT presented to mankind by it's creator in contrast to judaism/christianity where it's punishment for original sin - one of the most original concepts present in fantasy literature.

I thought dragons and Balrogs were also created by Melkor? When he is the most powerful of the Valar, why cant he create his own species as some of the others did?

    • baer008
      baer008 4 tháng trước

@Vīktør thats a good answer. Thanks!
But why did Eru create dragons and Balrogs when they are Evil creatures? Or were they corrupter by Melkor and betryed eru later? Were there "good" uncorrupted dragons left?
When balrogs are fallen Maia, why didn't sauron look like one?

    • Vīktør
      Vīktør 4 tháng trước +1

Because only Eru/God can truly create life, the others "created" their own specie's cause Eru allow them; Melkor NEVER created anything, he only corrupted something created by Eru

Better analogy for the Ainur would be gods. Eru was the creator god, the Valar were the main pantheon and the Maiar were lesser deities.

Little is written about Hobbits because Hobbits were made up for The Hobbit, which was rather loosely based on Tolkien's cosmology. He wrote most of his stuff for his own amusement and that of his friends, and never intended it for publication. The Hobbit was his first attempt to write something marketable. After the fact he had to fit them into the whole scheme, which he summed up by simply saying that "the world is full of strange creatures" and suggesting that nobody ever paid much attention to the Hobbits, but they'd been around the whole time.
The movie put pointy ears on them AND the Elves, which was a mistake because it falsely suggested a kinship between them. The books nowhere mention "pointy ears" on anyone, much less Hobbits. That bugged me. But it's hard to represent Elves since there are no Elves to audition. Something had to set them apart visually. In the books you definitely know you're talking to an Elf simply because they're an Elf. You "feel" it more than anything else. Hobbits, of course, are tiny (between 2 and 4 feet high at adulthood, usually trending toward the shorter end of that scale) and they have furry feet. But they're "humans" nevertheless. THEY don't think so, but they are. They also live longer than average humans, though not by a lot. About 20 years or so. A hundred is the new eighty.

    • Sir Jaojao
      Sir Jaojao 4 tháng trước

Actually Tolkien wrote a letter to an artist with a description of hobbits where he included pointy ears: "I picture a fairly human figure, not a kind of ‘fairy’ rabbit as some of my British reviewers seem to fancy: fattish in the stomach, shortish in the leg. A round, jovial face; ears only slightly pointed and ‘elvish’; hair short and curling (brown)". Here he not only claims that hobbits have pointy ears but also implies elves have them
