even the bear is like '' oh shit its a bear''
😂😂😂
This comment has no right being this funny
Underrated comment 😂😂
@will bowers what
I do the same I’m a big guy 6’3 big build and I walk down the street and cross the street seeing a regular dude walking towards me the initial “dudes walking alone at night” only to realises so am I. Always turns into hoping I don’t scare some poor woman she doesn’t deserve that
I like how the bear tried to understand what was happening but then chose violence instead
Every human ever "Am i right kekek"
Violence is not the answer it's a question and the answer is yes - sun tzu art of war
He’s like fuckkk not only is it a terrifying huge bear trying to kill lil ol me who am but a chipmunk’s size, but it’s also got some high tech super bear powers and can turn 2d
😂😂😂
he was probably thinking like "WOW, OH, OHH SHIT, UH, UHMMM, VIOLENCE"
Love how the bear just raged out and destroyed the mirror 😆
Classic bear that 😂
@Oliver Boisen Like u know
@Ahron The Great Chill. Don’t use all your edginess in one go
I like how elephants, cats, magpies, and pigs not only recognize themselves, but they are among the few animals that use the mirrors “correctly”
(not toying with it, but using it to check its own body and appearance, and using it as a tool the same way we do)
And dolphins!
You forgot great apes.. Chimps, bonobo, orangutans, gorilla's.
Well all of these are known for their intelligence. So great, now we know mirror is good IQ test for animals lol
I just love the idea of animals being so confused how their enemy in the mirror is prediction and countering every single move they make.
My previous dog not only understood how mirror works but also watched me walking in/out of the house in a mirror while staying behind the corner (I'm not sure if she knew I can see her too 😅). The sweetest thing was she sometimes came over when I was putting on coat in front of the large mirror, looked up on my reflection then on her and after several rounds she was making an loud sigh of disappointment. She also understood phonecalls, photographs and many more. Now I have another dog, which is not as smart as her, but he stills enjoys looking at himself in the mirror, but seems to be a bit ashamed when caught doing it haha
That elephant really loved the way he looked , he checked every angle 😭
Elephants are so smart its incredible. But ya that was great
I really love that reaction as well. Man, smart as they can be, they are truly gentle giant of respecting them and be kind to them. I kept watching that part of enjoying himself over and over it made my day so good too. 😆😁🙂
Lmfao elephants w !!!
Let's hear it for that pachyderm pride! 🐘 😎👍
I've moved a magpie that had been hit by a car(not fully dead) out of the street, it panicked. The others attacked me at first thinking I was hurting it, then when I sat down and just held (it until it passed as there are no bird refuges in the area) the others eventually just fluttered down and stayed with us and when It finally passed I placed it on a makeshift bedding beneath a tree, I'd bring wildflowers, pretty rocks, or shinys to the spot when I passed by it. After about a month I would find some extra trinkets there, so I sat in the distance and waited to see who was doing it. It was the other magpies, they had been watching me bring stuff to the spot and started doing it themselves when I would fail to coneby and do it.
I love this.
this comment is so precious
it took the pig hours to figure it out and they are very intelligent, most other animals never figured it out, but the elephant almost immediately is checking its own teeth out, that just shows how smart they really are.
It was a piglet to be fair, not fully grown
Four legs good, two legs bad.
How about the silver back checking out his tongue 😂
Im pretty sure the pig just smelt the food that was 3 inches away and went to it lol
Animals definitely understand reflections. Maybe my doggos are just nonplussed (and my younger one understands how to play ball using it, it’s sooooo cute) because they’ve had years to get used to the giant sliding mirrors, but it’s clear they get it.
No they dont ...they just think its a real thing in front of them, not a reflection
I didn't realize that it was unusual for cats to recognize reflections. My cat and I used to stand in front of my sliding glass door looking outside, and when we wanted to communicate with each other, we would just make eye contact with the reflection, so that we did not have to break our observation of the outside to look at each other. Granted, she was extremely intelligent for a cat, but I was unaware that particular behavior was special.
it's not, I've had cats my whole life and they all could recognize their reflections. Even the dogs we had could recognise themselves and didn't care about the mirrors at all.
@EmilysStar so?
@Random_Cable69 we've had a lot of cats since there were a lot of strays in our neighbourhood, and we saved a lot of cats that went to other people. So it's not 2 or 3 cats I'm talking about...
There's a diffrence between recongizing it as not a real cat and recognize it as themselves. It doesn't smell cat so they figure out it's not a real cat soon enough.
@EmilysStar Were there mirrors or other reflective surfaces near floor level in your house? It seems to me that recognizing how a mirror works requires frequent interaction with mirrors, something most animals don't do. Its no wonder a bear in the woods has no clue what a mirror is, its never seen one before.
One of the craziest reactions to reflections I know from personal experience is the cardinal (a bird). Cardinals seem to take the cake in terms of getting territorial against their reflection. Our front door had a reflective strip at the bottom, and for hours every day, we would hear the cardinal "knocking" on our door as he attempted to fight his reflection. Years later, at my dad's work, he told us that day after day, a cardinal would repeatedly dive-bomb his window, seeing its reflection in it.
The cat touching her own ears after seeing them in the mirror was one of the cutest things ever.
Wym "them?" 🤨
Since I can't reply to everyone I'll just edit my comment.
Damn I didn't even expect people to actually get mad at my comment. I literally made this comment as a joke and people took it too personal lmao, that just shows how people get angered that easily.
@shaunmiael9996 if you are joking then shame on me I’m an idiot, but “them” is referring to the ears it’s plural because there is ya know two ears.
Tbh if i didn't know i had ears like that i'd act like the cat
@ShaunMikael999, ESL cringe
@ShaunMikael999 lol look at this kid
My cat watches me and my wife at crazy angles sometimes using mirrors. He reacts by running away when we catch him. Very odd little guy. Honestly creeps us the hell out 😂
That is pretty smart
They say that cats are far more intuitive than other animals, so him or her acting a bit strange could be it seeing or sensing something or someone that you and your partner don't see or sense. Most people who dabble in the occult have cats because they are considered a bridge to the other side if you know what you're doing, and are always far more sensitive to what, it would seem, most people don't feel and don't have the necessary skills (I suppose) to pick up on any extraordinary things that may happen to you like a cat seems to be able to do. I more than once, have been in an empty room with my cat that I had at the time ,and he would suddenly look towards the hall leading to the front door and start hissing and even occasionally spit at something that I never saw or felt, although, the house had what I would call a heavy, dark energy that I felt from the moment I moved in there but never seemed to have a problem with, unlike my cat,who didn't like whatever it was that it would do to piss him off. Whenever it happened, the cat had a major meltdown and once while it was happening I watched him snarl, hiss and lash out at nothing, as far as I could tell, and then he would bail out and find his happy place to calm down. He was a little freaky too.
@Geoffrey Bennett One of my cats looks under the closed basement door like maybe she sees someone standing behind the door. She stares totally frozen under that door and it scares the heck out of me.
Great video. It’s always impressive to see how many animals actually understand the concept of a mirror. Btw, the „Cheetah“ at 1:13 is actually a Leopard as well.
Edit: typo
A Jaguar actually
@lionhead123 No, Jaguars have larger rosettes with dots inside and this one‘s tail tip is white at the bottom which is characteristic for Leopards.
@lionhead123 leopard
How can you be wrong twice pale?? Woah lol
I was hopping to find this comment.
I laughed every single time the squirrel bumped on the mirror and I laughed out so loud that my parents thought I was crying 😂
Dogs can recognize themselves in the mirror. I would put jackets on my pit and she would go to the mirror to check out what it looked like. She did this with any accessories we gave her lol
Same. I have a mirror on one of my doors, and they can see themselves when the door is closed. And I always catch them looking at me through the mirror lol. Then when I call their name, they turn and look at me. Not only that, I also catch them looking at themselves too when we put a bandanna on them.
Also WhatAboutBunny the Sheepadoodle's channel definitely recognized herself in the mirror.
2019+ research shows that dogs are self aware (which means this video is bs). The mirror issue differs from dog to dog, as most dogs don't rely on sight as much as humans.
Put it down.
@Goldfish_Vender another pitty hater?
I feel it has more to do with an animal feeling safe to explore than with self-awareness. Those who feel safe (not stressed and distrusting), all show more curiosity and thus are open to exploration.
Imagine a human in a war-zone on high-alert suddenly shown a reflection. Larger chance they wouldn't look and wonder but hide or run, aswell.
interesting
The kitty discovering its ears was so adorable 😍
what if was was deaf? idk. Surely not.
Definitely self aware. I wonder if he will realize he is a cat.
@Nomadia Van What do you mean if he realizes he is a cat?
The word cat is a human invention. Will he know that he’s a different type of creature from his owners? Maybe.
@Brandon Most cats are able to distinguish the differences between cats and humans. This is demonstrated in how they ask for help from humans with tasks humans are better at than they are, such as opening a can of wet cat food. With how many instances there are of wild critters asking humans for help, there's a good chance others can distinguish the differences, too.
@HauntedShadowsLegacy in fact, almost any animal can tell the difference between a lot of spicies. They need it to survive, they need to know whos a treat and who is a friend. Because they live in placea where the only thing isnt predators and them. There are predators, yes, but also other herbivores that dont represent a threat for them.
That applys for any animal.
I've shown my cats a mirror multiple times before. They literally just don't care so I'm not sure if they can recognize their reflections or not. But I like to imagine they do due to how smart they often proves themselves to be.
I guess even if an animal understands it's them, do they care about their appearance? If there was some advantage with regards to getting food I'd bet that a lot of species would eventually learn what a reflection was but beyond that why would they care?
My dog understands mirrors. Not sure how recently but she is 14 years old and has definitely learnt the concept. Usually she gets excited when she sees me sneaking up on her in the reflection 😅
How do you know they aren't just responding to the sound and smell of you? You should try this put a television recording of you in the mirror and see if the reaction is the same when you aren't actually present.
she just thinks the reflection is you
My cat also knows how reflections work. She'll be on the counter in the bathroom looking at herself and I do the same thing with my finger and she will meow and look back at me as if to say, "I know what you're doing" lol
No one asked
I asked plus i love cats
@Stardust_Crusaders show the comment where you asked. I'll wait
@Apple Mcklan i pmed them asking xo
I like how he mentions that the appparent non-recognition of oneself's reflection might be connected to the social/lack of social life of a given animal, contributing to aggresive behaviour, not just a "lack of self-awarness". Nice compilation :)
2:37 that’s truly amazing 😻
oha yes
That wasn't a Cheetah. That was a Jaguar. They saw their reflection as a threat and not a friend.
Alright cool, I'm not the only one who noticed that lol.
I was writing same, but luckilly came to comments first :D
Sorry, but it wasn't a jaguar either. It was a leopard!
If the cat was in South America it was a jaguar. If it was in Africa it was a leopard. But it definitely not a cheetah.
@Philip Hintze If the cat was in South America it was a jaguar, if in Africa it was a leopard, But it surely wasn't a cheetah!
I like how the reactions seemed to REFLECT the animal’s intelligence.
Imagine what goes through these animals’ heads when they attempt to engage with what they perceive to be a three dimensional world, and as they reach out to the reflection, they’re met with an equal, and opposite, reaction, such that, no matter what they do, they can never enter that world? 💛
Ikr it must be confusing and scary as hell for them I'm so glad to be human ...
Animals looking at themselves in the mirror can have different reactions depending on the species and individual animal. Some animals, like primates, dolphins, and elephants, have been known to recognize themselves in mirrors, which suggests a certain level of self-awareness.
Other animals, like cats and dogs, may be more likely to see their reflection as another animal and display aggressive or playful behavior towards it. Birds, on the other hand, may simply be curious about their reflection and may not recognize themselves at all.
I have mirrors through my house and have had many dogs.. Not a single one has ever acted strangely near the mirrors. My last dog one day saw a twig stuck to his back in the mirror as he walked passed and turned around to grab it. Seems pretty conclusive to me that this was something they absolutely understood.
Magpies deserve more love and respect. They are truly phenomenal creatures and far more intelligent than dogs, cats, sharks and elephants. For example, magpies can unwrap a plastic bag, this demonstrates amazing amount of dexterity and patience.
The smart birds are something else pulling hi for non human intelligence with very little size of brain
I wonder if they also have trick humans brains have that allows massively more processing speed recently they figured out. It one part that most animals use one way but function changed up in humans brains.
Love and respect lol? You want people put trying to hug them or something?
1:39 my heart is melting😭💗
These animals simply can't believe how beautiful they are.
The angry ones were just jealous of their own reflections 😂😅
"Oh yes, look at my 4 legs, i've been bulking up in the Gym... Ohh yeahh"
No
Yeah it really is just brains that we out-do animals with, they are tougher, braver, more resilient and far more beautiful than we could ever dream of being. IMHO.
@TryNDoxMe Why is your user asking people to doxx you?
I loved the way dolphin looked at her 😭❤
Omg yess
This is very lovely and adorable♥️
The big cats acting like normal house cats in front of mirrors is so adorable
My cat Jinx drinks water on from a cup on the bathroom sink. He watches me from the mirror, even while I'm petting him, but if I look at him through the mirror he will turn around and look at me or stop looking at me. He definitely knows how mirrors work and cats like observing people when they think we're not looking.
I like to imagine that the animals that attack their reflections, like the roosters, have these internal dialogues like " Oh man, this guy's good, he's matching every attack I've thrown so far, he's as good as I am."
Why no comments
I will not fall to you Kakarot!!!
Or "ugly as i am"
I thought it was just me
And on top of that, it’s like I’m running into a wall every time I hit them…
Pigeons also recognize themselves in the mirror almost immediately 😊 (they also like to watch tv, usually something interesting to them, like the video of a canary singing and bird stuff like that 😅)
yes, my pet pigeon not only uses them to see around the corner but also checks himself out in the mirror. if you put a sticker on he'd take it off immediately- unless he liked how it looked. I wish people would just Ask pet owners - you'd find a lot of these behaviors aren't 'rare.' I've Never owned a cat that didn't understand mirrors. I think the wild animals aren't used to manufactured mirrors with that amount of clarity. I'm sure they learn quickly.
My cat eventually figured out mirrors. He used to meow at himself in the mirror when he was young, but eventually he reacts to me in the mirror like that guy did with his cat in the video. Maybe it depends on how much time spent in front of one, since in my old bathroom there was this huge 80s mirror in front of the sink counter where he often sat, so he figured out me coming in and out being reflected in the mirror.
My dog certainly understands reflections and mirrors. He constantly likes to look via them and understands how they work.
Absolutely loved the bear. Gave me a great laugh. 🤣😂💗❤
I don’t know if my dog understands his own reflection, but he surely knows mine, and when he sees me in the mirror doing something that usually provokes his reaction (taking his toy, watching at him, doing literally anything unusual or showing him something), he knows where to go to.
I had a pet lizard who learned how reflections worked. At first he had an aggression response, puffing himself out. But then, he calmed down and started licking the mirror, turning his head from side to side, and even closing his eyes reaaallly slowly before opening them up quickly. Really reminded me of when I was a kid trying to see how I looked with my eyes closed.
"If I don't look at it, it'll go away...If I don't look at it, it'll go away...If I don't look at it, it'll go away..."
Not to mention human toddlers often don't know that's them at first too. So it also doesn't put humans above other species, if that other animal doesn't know at first and then figures it out.
when I was a kid I tried to see how I looked with my eyes closed too 😂
@Cynacist I mean obviously humans are still wayy smarter than any other animal but yeah it’s neat that some animals have learned this self awareness at an earlier age than we do but of course that’s probably also due to the fact that some of them just mature and reach adulthood quicker than humans do.
@Kentucky Bear Arms It's been around 15 years since the invention of the iphone. Before that, it wasn't really common for people to just have a camera lying around, and especially kids, we didn't really have much technology around to use. At most we had a computer, but there wasn't the internet too, so apart from single player games and work, they weren't used for much. For us millennials it would have been extremely uncommon to think of a camera just to see ourselves. A mirror was way easier to use (even though you can't see yourself with your eyes closed. Kids are dumb XD )
My cat uses a mirror as a tool. We play by me sitting on the floor with my back to her and she tries sneaking up on me until I make eye contact through the reflection. She also likes to sit on my dresser and use the mirror to watch me without looking at me directly. When she first discovered the mirror she thought it was a friend then left it sadly when she realized it was just her reflection. I hope to one day get her a friend 🥺
@Apple Mcklan What in the world??
My dog totally understands her reflection. She likes to sit and look at herself and if I try to get her attention she’ll look at me from the reflection in the mirror just like the chihuahua in this video
no she doesnt..dogs have no concept of self awareness
This is not the first time they see their reflection, they see their reflection in the water all the time.
The quality and the position of the reflection is what's new.
water doesn't always reflect
@Celatra Kind of always does since water is a reflective material.
Granted in some case the reflection isn't great if there is a lot of waves for instance. "All the time" is a manner of speaking, it's not actually all the time indeed.
This is why I love animals!! So freaking funny 😂😂
Ele's, magpies, dolphins, pigs and great apes are all considered to be exceptionally intelligent and among the most intelligent creatures on Earth. It doesn't surprise me at all that they were able to recognize their reflection. It does make me wonder just what goes through their mind when they see themselves in the mirror
I love how cats are such a wildcard. Either they are adorable and smart, or they are VERY DISPLEASED about their new rival.
now all those animals have ego and narcissism
I think that cats wil eventually learn what a reflection is. I have a cat who used to attack her reflection, and crash into mirrors, but now she uses them to groom herself and interect with me. Additionally, my younger cat still doesn't know what a mirror is, and tries to play with what she thinks is another cat.
I find they figure it out pretty quick if their owner is in the same mirror. Doesn't take them too long to put two and two together!
@unfunny - guy She probably got bored of it, and it just so happens that she grooms in front of the mirror sometimes. Also they know what a reflection is, they've seen reflective surfaces before, they don't understand what a mirror is.
All my cats understood the mirror. Especially Kilala. He LOVED checking himself out in the mirror. Got a look at every angle. He thought he was hot stuff. LOL
My cat knows it's her own reflection. And I think a lot of other animals do too after a while. Only the 1st couple of times it confuses them, but than they start realising they are looking at themselves
3:29 one of the cutest and funniest things I've ever seen. I can't stop laughing.
What a great video! I like how you didn't just include more spectacular reactions like lashing out at the mirror, but also disinterest, showing the whole variety of behavior.
My dog could recognize itself. Once he came home from a groomer with a bad haircut - the dissapointment on his face when he saw himself in the mirror - priceless.
No, dogs dont have self awareness
@DONKEY well, mine did.
@herizzi no, you are projecting that onto him...dogs arent capable of self awareness
@DONKEY please, you didn't know my dog. He was very self-aware. And extremly intelligent.
I once had a rooster who would just stand in front of a mirror admiring himself, this rooster I had was highly aggressive but I never saw him attack the mirror so I believe he knew it was himself.
Oh, thats quite interesting. Perhaps he was more inteligant than the norm.
I think he was thinking, man I look great.
probably thought he met his match 😭
I've seen several pets look up when the owner uses a cam filter.. they may or may not recognize their own reflection but they clearly react to the person holding them suddenly looking different.. the double takes are epic ..
My dog understands mirrors pretty well, infact she uses them to see what we're doing without turning all the time
It’s weird to me that chihuahuas are considered dumb bc all the one I’ve had were extremely intelligent. My teacup loves looking at herself in the mirror. She often uses the mirror to look at her outfit and will take it off if she doesn’t like the way it looks 😂
I like how at 1:15 you mistake a leopard for a cheetah and explain that he greets his reflection because cheetahs are social animals and then at 6:35 you explain that leopards attack their reflection because they are highly aggressive 😄
I feel cheated by this.
My dog loves lookin at herself in the mirror ❤
Most other animals: Admiration, confusion, asoundment, fear, shock, curiosity, wraith
White tiger: Nah I've already seen him before 🥱
3:05
My cat react the same way when I showed him a mirror, I was excited for no reason he look so bored lol
This is incredible ironic considering his species is slowly going extinct.
@Gibley Man it's not a species it's a mutation and they exist because of inbreeding
@Nameless I guess it's THAT easy to tell I'm horrible at biology or just animal facts in general.
But eh, you get the point so
I had a house cat that suddently realized that it's her reflection. She looked at the reflection for a while because she had a napping spot near the mirror. Then she noticed and became alert. She came to the mirror and pawed at the reflection. After she saw it copy precisely her own movement a few times, she licked her own paw and went back to her resting spot, continuing not caring. That was the end of her investigation.
There are levels to self awareness, and all animals have it.
I used to show my cat himself in the mirror when he was little and then he got it eventually when I would tell him "that's you!!!" And he'd look at it so calmly because he knew I was there with him talking about it. Like he knew i knew what it was and I was seeing me and I told him he was looking at himself too and he got it eventually. It was kinda adorable haha
So your cat understands English and the concept of self?
@Brett pilkington he did!
I have seen firsthand that most birds do not understand mirrors. In high school the room that I did my homework in was regularly attacked by a goldfinch at the window. Every day it’d show up and peck at the window. The only reason I could think it did that was because it was spring (they get territorial) and thought its reflection in the window was competition lmao
The sound was pretty distracting, hard to work near lol
I think most animals can understand mirrors, given curiosity instead of stress or anger
My old kitty understood mirrors. I'm not sure if she ever quite understood her _own_ reflection since she never showed any interest in it, but she'd watch me around corners through the mirror, and if she was facing the mirror and I reached out to pet her she'd react to it, preparing to get pet from behind. She also seemed to recognize that speaking to the mirror-me was the same as speaking to the real me, and would sit on the counter as I got ready in the mornings, talking enthusiastically to my reflection. So she definitely understood the concept to some degree. It was always funny looking over into the hallway and seeing her staring at me from the other room through the mirror 😂
How many mirrors do you have?
@Pro corporation we have lots
@howdyho dam
there may also be another explanation. The cat may simply be mistaking your hand in the mirror with something he is seeing. It is not that the cat knows that it is him, in the reflected image. But by simply seeing your hand reflected, he simply processes the image as if he were seeing it, with his eyes. In fact, the cat's eyes have a very apliatic view compared to the human one and therefore he could process the information thinking that he is seeing it with his eyes.
@Eros Gritti I don't see how that would explain the cat knowing the hand is coming from behind. My cat does the same thing and he is absolutely aware that I'm actually behind him.
The other interesting thing in my cat's case is that he hates other cats, so while he doesn't seem to care much about his reflection, if he recognizes it as a cat at all, he knows it's him.
What a beautiful world we share with these amazing animals
The same animals that wanna eat us lol
@Dark Phoenixxxx you hella reaching, humans eat waaay more species than any other animal. And there are animals that don’t eat meat at all.
Many wild animals see their reflections daily while drinking water from ponds, puddles, and creeks without freaking out in confusion, it's just that they aren't expecting to encounter a vertical reflection of themselves in a randomly placed mirror
Wow, it was really surprising when a cat recognized itself
My pet snake(ball python) did something somewhat interesting. Up until he was about two years old, he would occasionally refuse to eat frozen/thawed mice/rats, so I would have to feed her live prey. However, very often when I did this, she would get confused by the reflection of the mouse on the glass, and strike at that. I found this particularly odd because as the video states, certain snakes have "heat/infrared" vision, meaning they have a sort of second "layer" of vision, based on how warm something is(and apparently it's highly accurate, down to a fraction of a degree.)
Though I will say she did it the most when the reflection of the prey item(from her point of view) was showing up where I have a large black heat pad stuck to the outside of her enclosure, making it easier for her to see reflections, and potentially making the prey item look more attractive to them because of the heat.
My ball python was the same with food. I had to buy a long pair of tongs and use them to wiggle the mice around so he'd think they were alive 😂 He wouldn't eat them if he thought they were already dead.
My cat not only recognizes himself in the mirror, but also looks at me through it to try and get my attention.
Edit: For those interested, feline in question: vnclip.net/video/lXx0GS_4Mrw/video.html
My cat not only recognizes her reflection but often grooms herself in front of it to make sure she is perfectly presentable at all times and not a single strand of hair is out of place.
my cat likes to freak me out by staring at me through the mirror... for no particular reason
Wow thats really somethin!!! understands that YOU too will be able to see the reflection that he is seeing.
Mine too!!
My cat doesn’t care about the mirror
The octopus had the calmest rushing out I seen 😂
Hats off for gathering them in one video.
I had a bird fighting his reflection in my car mirrors for a couple of days. I finally put a bag over the mirrors every day for a week and he moved on to attacking the birds living in my neighbors car mirrors.😝
It would be interesting to see how humans react to first seeing their reflection
That bears reaction is classic. Startled and then just pissed off and looking to knock a fool out.
I like how calm and chill the elephant is...
Dude checking out his drip
These tusks right here, they go for 50 grand...
If I was the biggest animal on land, I would be pretty fucking calm and I would certainly be pretty fucking chill. 💯
@s3 dGhost That isn’t even funny. 🤦🏾
My cat doesn’t care about mirrors at all but she does understand the concept. I have a mirror on one of my kitchen cabinets above the sink and she will always lay behind me on top of the tall fridge to stare at me in the mirror to get my attention. So she does know the reflection is still me ,that’s turned its back at her, standing in front of a reflective object. Cats are smarter than you think 🥲
My Pomeranian/Husky mix will often times look at me through the mirror when she’s facing away from me. If I turn to the mirror to acknowledge her, and start waving at her she immediately puts her ears back and starts wagging her tail. She definitely recognizes that the reflection is me, it’s the cutest thing ever.
That bear went from 0-100 REAL QUICK. He threw hands with that mirror quick af!
My house cat passed the mirror test less than half a year old. It was always tremendously bored af when seeing herself.
The cow was so wholesome, she thought it was her friend 😢
1:41 Interesting that cat is CLEARLY self aware, not reaching over to the ears in the reflection but to its own ears.
I would not say cleary, even without capslock, I saw cats in my yard do this countless times, without a mirror present.
The framing fo the video does nto help the confirmation bias of cat lovers either.
Either way don't think this is a solid example for self awareness and uncomparable in evidential weight to the magpie with the yellow sticker under it's beak whcih removes it after being infront of a mirror.
@AGenericFool Since you see fit to assume a mantle of higher education, I'm interested in learning your perspective on those cats which react strongly when subjected to those apps that swaps faces.
@AGenericFool I think atleast my cat is self aware about reflections. It has never reacted to reflections in anyway and does groom itself in front of the mirror. Also if I pop behind, my cat immediately turns back to look at me, thus understanding i am not inside the mirror.
I geniunely think mirror test will be dependent on how much time is give to each animal in front of the mirror. Over time you would expect them to understand that its a reflection similar to how they are reflected in water.
If i didnt know anything about mirror and reflections, maybe i would react in the same way.
The most amazing to me is the fact that dolphins are able to recognise their reflection.
@Blip Blop Funny thing... I would swear to you that my 13 yr old Cavalier- Maverick, used to NOT really look at himself or me in the mirror. On the other hand, I've noticed a couple times recently that he has actually use the mirror to look me in the eyes/face! I think he has come to realize what it does.
my cat seems aware of its own reflection. But he jsut dont care
My dog absolute understands how mirrors work. He knows his reflection and shadow. He understands he can see my reflection around a corner and know exactly where I am. Like when I go the bathroom, he knows I'm in the bathroom but he will watch me through the mirror bc he hates baths and doesn't like goin in the bathroom.
I remember my dog suddenly growling. She is never aggressive. Then i realized that she saw her reflection of herself in our glass oven that is on the floor. It was hilarious. My dogs not the brightest 😂
That is normal they always see reflections as different dogs because they know themselves by scent and not view
We need a mirror technology that allows animals to become completely self aware
I can proudly say that my cat CAN recognize himself in the mirror!))) ❤
I had a Jack Russell/Rat Terrier who could recognize herself in the mirror (not at first but she figured it out) and used it to locate doggy treats. To be fair she watched TV and would trick my Lab into giving her the big bed by playing with her toy infront of the Lab and luring her away then immediately taking the bed. My Lab couldn't recognize her reflection and couldn't see the TV
Elephants are super-intelligent. My uncle teased one at my local zoo (when he visited us) by offering food and when elephant reached to take it, he withdrew it.
A channel of water separates people from elephants in that zoo (among other things). The teased elephant took water from there and poured it on my uncle, who was completely wet.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 well done, elephant
Antonio.Good. Your uncle was mean and he deserved the punishment.👍
hahaha get pranked
Do the mirror test on the uncle
Seeing how beautiful they are ❤.
I love harmless curiosity in animals
For many days I was sad about how I looked ....good in the front camera which is Like a mirror and asymmetrical in the back Camera but today when I saw this video I realized that the animals they even don't know how they look but still they bear unconditional love for a human being and for their on children and their own species That is when I realized that true love is what that matters and not the looks
My dog was depressed for a minute after getting his first hair cut and looked at himself through a reflection. He likes to stare at his own reflections during walks, granted he is old and a fairly smart dog as he tries to act dumb when he wants attention and even occasionally acts like it’s cold outside only to leap in once I open the door to check the climate and see if my dog is okay (he’s okay he tries many different tactics to get attention, very healthy dog).
ie I think dogs have self awareness. Though I’ve only dealt with one dog which was adopted at the age of 5, I assume most mature dogs would know their reflections.
My dog ran into my glass door thinking it was open and then stared at herself and barked 😂
Almost every time I'm standing in front of the mirror with my cat. She is looking at me through it. It's crazy that she understands so easily how mirrors work 😳
They may have seen their reflection before in puddles
@Dylan Murphy Puddles if they're outdoor cats, or windows. My cat would fight with her reflection in the windows until she realized there was no other cat and it was her. 😂
@Jolene8 My cat just kind of stare at her reflection and seem disinterested by it lol, not even a reaction
Adult cats know it's them in mirrors
@Sinonya I think sometimes people disregard cats as intelligent or somewhat capable because they usually do things out of their own willingness, not unwavering loyalty or trust like dogs
1:45 cat's expression was 😆🥰
Once we had to set down a wall mirror while we were renovating the house. That's when we realized our dogs (2 shih tzus, 1 aki) spent HOURS in front of the mirror. They don't look at themselves all the time though but whenever they do, they alternate between cute face and war face. Cutest thing.
My cats watch me from the mirror all of the time and turn around when I get near them.
Our half grown ginger kitten was looking at himself in the mirror one day and of course went to check who that might be behind the mirror. But just at that exact moment our black cat emerged from behind and the surprised look on the ginger's face was priceless. 😅 I only wish I had my camera on them.
4:14 the puppy is so cute 😊
